Anyone approaching such oft-recorded repertoire as this great pair of Chopin concertos really needs to bring some special credentials to the enterprise, and Charles Richard-Hamelin certainly has them The recording opens with the Concerto No. 2 and its subtle interpretative challenges seem well suited to Richard-Hamelin’s musical persona.
  • Dagor says:
Youthful Michel Block. The Second Sonata is terser and quicker than the later Guild recording, and more effective. The Op 53 Polonaise sounds peppy, and the Waltz is very fine. The Etudes are decidedly different than normal, with 25/5 a radical take. The Nocturne and three Mazurkas evoke later recordings, and the concerto is distinctive and superb.5/5(1).
