When you attach an external drive to a Mac to use with Time Machine and confirm the prompt that appears asking if you want to use it for that purpose, you may then be prompted to erase the drive.

Click System Preferences → Time Machine, and select Show Time Machine in menu bar. Step 2: Once you're in Time Machine, open the folder that contained the file that you wish to restore. Step 3: Use the dial on the right to navigate back through time until the item that you wish to restore appears in the folder.

Mar 13,  · When I hit save, then let the backup run through, I can then enter Time Machine and see that it hasnt been included in the backup because the drive has no history. I'm using a Macbook Air, and therefore, I aint got much disk space! So I need this solution to be available to me in order to carry on using this machine as my main machine.

Dec 21,  · Ditto - Time Machine performs periodic backups automatically. Disconnecting negates the purpose of Time Machine. However, you may consider connecting the external drive to a router that has a USB port. This way you can still backup to it using Time Machine without having to continuously disconnect it from your computer.
